Outward Bound California's annual high-rise fundraising event is back! On May 8th, 2024, I am representing Local 467 and will be rappelling off the rooftop of the Grand Hyatt in San Francisco's Union Square - crazy! But I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for a good cause.
About Me:
My name is Belynda and I am reaching out to you today to share this crazy journey I am on. I am fundraising for Outward Bound California, an organization that holds a special place in my childhood.
As a child of two addicts growing up in the challenging environment of the Tenderloin in San Francisco, life was filled with obstacles (finding used needles around the house, not having food, physical/sexual abuse, and neglect are just a few). I found myself surrounded by limited opportunities and lacked positive role models to guide me through the trials of life. Amidst these difficulties, Outward Bound became a beacon of hope and a catalyst for my personal transformation. Without the opportunities this program provided, I wouldn't have been able to make it out of the Tenderloin
Why Outward Bound California:
Outward Bound is not just an adventure program; it's a life-changing experience that empowers individuals to push past their limits, face challenges head-on, and discover their inner strength. The program instills a sense of belief in one's ability to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
My Personal Journey:
Outward Bound played a pivotal role in helping me realize that the life I grew up in isn't the life I need to stay in. My teachers in high school, Dana Erickson and Steve Hagler, introduced me to Outward Bound when I was 15 and through the activities of the program I realized that there is an entire different world out there. One that didn't involve sexual abuse, didn't involve a household filled with drug addicts, and didn't involve a body full of bruises. A world that is actually safe. A world where my ideas and needs actually mattered. Then Outward Bound helped me gain the confidence I needed to step away from what I've always known, take a risk and enter this new world. This is something I will always be grateful for.
