This event will be hosted on Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that celebrates victory over France during the Franco-Mexican War. Although often confused, it is not actually Mexican Independence Day. In the 60s, Chicano activists saw Cinco de Mayo as a way to encourage Mexican Americans to celebrate their culture and heritage. We encourage those that celebrate Mexican-American heritage to do so either on their own or at the event. For those who don't share this cultural connection, please refrain from any appropriative behavior like costumes or music during the event.
