LGBTQ+ Scholarships
~ you belong out here ~
With incredible community support, we are able to fund this year's entire expedition tuition for 10 LGBTQ+ young adults. We are busy processing applications as we speak. Together, we are removing barriers to outdoor access. And in three months Outward Bound California will provide an opportunity for powerful shared experience for these students amid the granite peaks, fir trees and crystal lakes of the High Sierra.
It is painful to witness yet another surge in anti-trans and gay legislation in early 2022, with 280 proposals in statehouses across the country aimed at some of the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community.
You can help us continue providing a safe outdoor space for teens who have experienced being marginalized due to their identity, and/or are exploring their sexual and/or gender identity, to build community and and cultivate inner strength, self-awareness and acceptance by contributing here!
On May 5th, to celebrate the success and continue the momentum of our grassroots LGBTQ+ Scholarship Campaign, my dear friend and colleague, PCT hiker and outdoor-access advocate Eva Johnson will be rappelling off of the 46th floor of the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. Here's what they shared about the personal importance of their ongoing journey, hike, and now courageous rappel,
"I strongly identify with two things: my outdoorsy-ness and my queerness. I believe that the outdoors is one of the safest spaces to fully be myself. I find that the outdoors is a place for healing, and an environment to feel empowered and autonomous. In a world that has, for all of time, discriminated against the LGBTQ+ community, it is especially important to hold safe, affirming spaces like this LGBTQ+ course."
Will you show your support in '22, by donating, or by joining the City Skyline Challenge with Eva and the LGBTQ+ team? There are still shifts to volunteer or be a fundraiser who rappels! Reach out to me at eford@OBCA for more deets!
Thank you for being a part of this awesome community of innovative change-makers, and making a difference for LGBTQ+ youth.
Sincerely,
emily
P.S. Locals, please let me know if you’d like to join the rappelers and OB staff for the after-party community celebration, kicking off around 5:00! C’mon down and raise a glass!
