2020 Rally for Resilience: Row or Get Towed!

Do you think I can row my boat to Hog Island and back? It's 10 miles (8.69 nautical miles for us geeks). I don't know if I can either. But because of my deep commitment to Outward Bound California, I'm about to find out.

The backstory: I became a member of the board of directors of OBCA a few years ago. Each year, the organization pushes me to do something I have never achieved before. Whether it's repel off a tall building, become an auctioneer, or consider how to make decisions more mindful of issues of diversity, each year the organization finds a way to get me to push my limits. It's just the culture of the organization: changing lives through challenge and discovery. (If you want to know exactly what I am talking about, look on the website at the Willow Creek Testimonial. You will see why I am so determined to support this organization.)

So when the Coronavirus Epidemic required cancellation of some of our signature events-- threatening funding sources for the new ropes course-- it was kind of obvious OBCA would Rally for Resilience. So here is my part:

Weather permitting, on October 30, I will row my boat toward Hog Island with the intent to circumnavigate the island and return to my starting point on Tomales Bay. It's just about 10 miles-- I hope to get back the same day. It is not clear I will make it, but I am asking all my friends to consider how much you would contribute to Outward Bound for each mile that I make it before I complete the trip (or before I have to get towed). With your support, all funds that I raise will support Ropes Course programs and attendance for students in OBCA’s partner schools.

OBCA's new ropes challenge course, built in partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, is in McLaren Park, located in one of the most under-resourced neighborhoods in San Francisco, will provide outdoor youth leadership training to students right in their backyards. Any amount you can donate will help young people from economically vulnerable communities to get outside, challenge themselves, and discover that there is more in them than they realize.

Sincerely, Abraham
