Join us for Outward Bound's Rally for Resilience Challenge: To Beaver & Back (Sort Of).

As uncomfortable as it makes us to ask family and friends to participate in a fundraiser, those of you who know us will see that this cause is right up our alley. Perhaps yours as well. No pressure!

We are fans of outdoor education and experiences. Members of our family have taken courses at three different Outward Bound schools. OB is well known for providing leadership development and personal growth in an outdoor environment.

The personal challenge is an element common to all OB courses. It's meant to be the culmination of the OB experience with an activity that helps students discover the extent of their capabilities. It's usually a long run, ski or other significant achievement.

This fundraising effort is based on our own personal challenge. We will row, on water or erg, 120 miles in a two week period (Note: we upped our goal to 200 miles). We are calling it "To Beaver and Back (Sort Of)". Beaver Island, about 30 miles offshore from our home in Harbor Springs, Michigan, is the most developed island of an archipelego in the middle of northern Lake Michigan. It's a 60 mile round-trip each to give our efforts a visual representation. As October is unlikely to pose weather and water conditions conducive to such a row, we will do it on our normal sculling venue, Crooked Lake. Should conditions preclude rowing there, our rowing erg in the basement will have to do.

With your support, all funds that we raise will support Ropes Course programs and attendance for students in OBCA’s partner schools. OBCA's new ropes challenge course, built in partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, is in McLaren Park, located in one of the most under-resourced neighborhoods in San Francisco and will provide outdoor youth leadership training to students right in their backyards. Your donation will support students attending the ropes course free of charge and help OBCA double the number of students they serve in California! Any amount you can donate will help young people from economically vulnerable communities to get outside, challenge themselves, and discover that there is more in them than they realize.

We appreciate you taking time to read about what we are up to. Even more importantly, should you choose to do so (remember, no pressure), thank you for supporting the Outward Bound Rally for Resilience campaign.

Sincerely, Jim and Laurie
